If you’re dealing with hair loss, you’ve likely heard of minoxidil. It’s one of the most popular hair loss treatments and comes as a solution you apply directly to your scalp or as an oral tablet.

However, minoxidil is not a permanent fix. If you stop using it, you will quickly lose your new hair growth. This leads to an important question: Is it safe to use minoxidil long-term?

In this article, we’ll look at the research on minoxidil’s effectiveness and safety over the long run. We’ll explore studies on how well it continues to spur hair growth over time and the potential side effects of long-term use.

Minoxidil Side Effects

While minoxidil can be an effective treatment for hair loss, it does come with some potential side effects to be aware of.

  • Temporary increase in hair shedding: Minoxidil works by speeding up the hair growth cycle, which can lead to some initial shedding of hair follicles in the resting phase. This hair shedding is temporary.
  • Skin irritation: Some people may experience minor discomfort, redness, or a slight burning sensation on the scalp.
  • Scaly or itchy scalp: Minoxidil can potentially cause or worsen scalp dryness, flakiness, or itchiness.
  • Increased body hair growth: This side effect is most commonly associated with oral minoxidil tablets and less frequently seen with topical solutions. The topical 5% minoxidil formula does present a slightly higher risk of excess facial or body hair growth compared to the 2% concentration. 1

Is Minoxidil Safe Long-Term?

Some medications are formulated for chronic conditions that require ongoing treatment. Minoxidil is one of these long-term therapies. Minoxidil only supports hair regrowth while you continue using it. This is because minoxidil is a treatment, not a cure, for hair loss. 2

Currently, there is no evidence indicating long-term minoxidil use causes health problems. In one 30-month study, researchers found that minoxidil remained effective while producing no systemic side effects. 3

Because minoxidil works by improving the microenvironment around hair follicles, it needs consistent use to provide benefits. Short-term use is unlikely to produce noticeable results. 2

Does Minoxidil Remain Effective with Long-Term Use?

Long-term studies have demonstrated that minoxidil can remain effective for years when used continuously.

In a 30-month study that followed 59 men using minoxidil, researchers found that hair regrowth peaked at 12 months. While some patients sustained a continued increase in hair count after 12 months, others had a decrease in average hair count. However, all patients had more hair than when they started minoxidil. Impressively, at 30 months, 70% of the patients had 50% or more hair than when they originally started minoxidil. 3

Another 5-year study followed 31 men using minoxidil, and researchers found that hair regrowth peaked at 1 year with a slow decline over subsequent years. However, at 4.5 to 5 years, the new hair growth was maintained, and participants had more hair than they did before they started minoxidil. 4

The takeaway is that minoxidil can stimulate new hair growth with long-term use. Though the peak response is at 12 months, studies show continued benefit over the long term. Most men had significantly more hair after minoxidil treatment than what they started with.

What Happens When You Stop Using Minoxidil?

While minoxidil can help stimulate hair growth, it doesn't address the underlying causes of hair loss. So, what happens when you stop minoxidil use after experiencing the benefits?

Essentially, your natural hair growth cycle resumes its previous pattern. Minoxidil prolongs the anagen phase where hair actively grows and shortens the telogen phase where shedding occurs. When you stop using it, the phases revert to their normal durations. This allows more hair to transition into the shedding phase. 5

The effects won't show up right away though. It takes 3 to 6 months before the increased shedding kicks in. 5

Conclusion

Minoxidil can be an effective treatment for hair loss, but it requires long-term use to maintain results. The good news is that research shows that minoxidil is generally safe and effective for long-term use.

Some people may experience side effects like scalp irritation when they first start using minoxidil. If you experience persistent side effects, talk to your doctor about additional treatments that can help manage them.
